Lupus is a common systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Lupus has become a well-known disease in the past few years, and more recently due to the fact that singer and actress, Selena Gomez told the world she has been fighting this disease for years now. She also recently posted a picture of her and Francia Raisa, a good friend of Selena’s in the hospital together. She revealed that her conditioned had worsened and she was in need of a kidney transplant. Luckily, Francia and Selena were a match, and Selena received a kidney from Francia. With the disease now making headlines, it is important to learn about this disease.

Signs and symptoms may come suddenly or develop slowly, they can be mild or severe and may be temporary or permanent. Most people with lupus have mild disease characterized by episodes. These episodes are called flares, this occurs when signs and symptoms get worse for a period of time, then improve or even disappear completely for another period of time. Some of the common signs and symptoms include fatigue, fever, joint pain, stiffness and swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes, headaches, confusion and memory loss. Another large sign is a butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose or rashes elsewhere on the body.
