Teaching Practice Critique: Mnemonic Analysis

Each article discussed in this teaching practice critique mentions three mnemonic methods : keyword, pegword, and letter strategies. Teachers can apply these techniques within the different content areas to improve student learning. These mnemonic methods are shown to be most effective when taught to students with disabilities. The use of mnemonics in the classroom is an effective evidence based practice with a 1.62 mean effect size (M.Burchard, personal communications, Fall, 2014).

This article has many strengths. It explicitly described how they found their articles and also what questions they asked to narrow the studies down. One limitation within this study is that it selected one outcome measure per study to represent the study’s effect (Wolgemuth, Cobb, & Alwell, 2008, p. 8). The total mean effect size of all 20 studied was 1.38. This last article was an interesting read. It also applies to me as a teacher in several ways. It is important for me to understand that mnemonics will not always have the best mean effect size of 1.62 on my students, but to try different methods in ways my students will benefit the most. The effect size in this article was smaller but still great enough to continually emphasize the importance of using mnemonics in the classroom.

Conclusion
Mnemonics are an extremely effective evidence based practice with a 1.62 mean effect size. There is clear evidence that mnemonics on students with disabilities learn better with mnemonic instruction. This mnemonic instruction may include keyword, keyword – pegword, and letter strategies such as acronyms. Overall these are similar but provide valuable facts and studies to apply in the classroom. It is important to be able to identify this teaching strategy as a teacher to push your students to their best potential and allow them tools to learn
