My farming background has inspired me to get involved with informing others about food production and environmental stewardship. If I were to give a TED Talk I would focus on educating my audience about the role of modern agriculture in their lives. Today many people have misconceptions about how food is produced and the impact of that production on the environment. I witnessed this firsthand at Princeton Model Congress, where I created a mock bill that would authorize spending on an agricultural awareness campaign. The purpose of the campaign was to inform the average consumer about modern agricultural practices and technologies and how they help maintain a safe, sustainable food supply and a clean environment. Engaging in months of research, I gathered facts and opinions from both sides of the issue. I developed a multitude of coherent arguments on both scientific and emotional levels to support my view. My peers shocked me with how strongly they held on to their erroneous views that were based largely on hearsay despite compelling evidence to the contrary. …show more content…
For example, GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) have been proven to produce higher yields using fewer acres with no adverse effects on humans or the environment over forty years of research. The emotional argument about free range chickens has also been proven scientifically incorrect. Free range chickens have higher stress levels, are more susceptible to predators, lay less eggs, and have more bone fractures. Both of these examples highlight cases where a misinformed populace has hampered our ability to safely and efficiently produce food. Some may still say that these methods are immoral. To them I ask is it ethical to continue to purchase food grown by slash and burn farmers in Brazil instead of implementing these proven technologies to help feed a hungry
