Drinking has always been a big problem even in the early years of America. I choose to talk about the problem with teenagers drinking because of the things I have learned about drinking and teens during D.A.R.E. (drug abuse resistance education) or drivers ed. We have all heard stories or seen videos of people drinking and hurting others. I want this to stop. Alcohol is starting to get younger and younger buyers. “By age 15, about 33 percent of teens have had at least 1 drink.” (NIAAA). Teenage drinking goes on because teenagers like to experiment. Experimenting leads teenagers to party and get drunk. They also like the fact that it is risky and makes them “loosen up”. “They’re not sipping alcohol- they’re gulping it down like soda.” (Dick Schaefer).
Not only is it the age that is a huge factor of the problem, but also it’s the fact that kids are combining drinking and marijuana. “Drinking and marijuana are two things that are hurting our youth. We need to fix this problem by making sure kids know how bad this is.” (Azofeifa, Alejandro, Margaret E. Mattson, and Rob Lyerla). The combining of these two drugs can be deadly for teenagers. Teenagers when they get drunk choose to do stupid things and can even hurt others. “Approximately 600,000 students are unintentionally injured while under the influence of alcohol.” (Stephenson, Steve). We all have heard the stories or watched on the news of innocent people who are torn apart by careless drinkers. Drinking can also affect your body. “Both moderate and heavy drinking can lead to inappropriate and aggressive behavior. Many people know alcohol is a depressant. Referring to its ability to depress or slow down brains processing.” (Effect of Alcohol on the Brain). When the body is attacked by alcohol, teenagers can become aggressive, crazy, or tired.
