The Texas War for Independence is most remembered for the Alamo, however, it should be remembered for its impact on history. The Texas War of Independence was a war that took place between the Anglo settlers of the Texas Territory against the Mexican government from October 2, 1835 through April 21, 1836. During The Texas War of Independence was caused by ideas of Manifest Destiny. This caused a disregard for Mexican laws. Another domino that led to Texas declaring independence was General Santa Ana seizing power. Santa Ana set up a centrist government and dissolved the previously existing state governments. Then “Santa Anna moved to crush liberalism in northern Mexico, the Americans in Texas initiated a rebellion”(Texas Revolution). After …show more content…
After the Texas War of Independence, the “Mexican government had grown wary of further encroachment upon its territory”(Sticklor). After Congress had approved the annexation of Texas they sent a diplomat to Mexico to smooth things over with Mexico. The diplomat offered to pay for both California and Texas. Mexico rejected this offer because they didn’t recognize Texas as its own country and they still didn't want to lose more land. All in all the Texas War of Independence was the main cause for the Mexican-American War. Another effect of the Texas War of Independence was the beginning of Westward Expansion. Westward Expansion was fueled by the idea of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny means that “God had chosen and predestined the U.S. government and its people to build a great nation as an example to the world, the phrase evoked a sense of national uniqueness and superiority known as American exceptionalism”(Stansbury). This idea justified people to move west because they felt that God had given them the right to the land. This attitude was very prevalent in Texas, where people didn’t even follow Mexican laws because they felt that the laws didn’t apply to them. The Texas Revolution gave another justification to Westward Expansion. The pioneers saw what happened in Texas, how the small Texan army was able to fend off the Mexican force and become independent.
