Although I consider myself an independent spirit, it took a flaming Butterball turkey for me to appreciate the roots of my inner strength and creativity. Upon reflection, my 2012 Thanksgiving holiday demonstrates the significant influences that shaped me into a person excited to take on the challenges and anxieties of transitioning to college life.
Every year, Mom routinely cooks a big Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing, Nana makes baked corn and apple pies, Grandad helps cook the turkey, and my Dad, older brother Reilley, and I chop wood for the fireplace. Then, everyone comes together at the dinner table to enjoy the feast.
In 2012, there was a notable exception to our Thanksgiving routine. Weeks before the holiday, Reilley and I had convinced Mom to fry the turkey for a new taste. We bought the turkey fryer well in advance, and assumed that with Keane know-how we would get the job done Thanksgiving morning without the directions.

But of course, the fryer was left untouched until Thanksgiving day. This proved to be a disastrous mistake. When assembling the fryer, we discovered it was missing a key part: the pipe for connecting the fryer to the gas tank. Without the connecter, our turkey fryer was utterly useless. Instantly, my heart sank with the thought of a turkey-less Thanksgiving.
In dire need of a solution, I spotted our grill and suggested to Dad and Reilley the possibility of using it to cook the turkey. Although they initially questioned the idea of using an open flame on a pre-oiled turkey, as I persisted, we began to collectively explore how combining the grill with fryer might actually save the day. After some discussion, we moved our grill to the grass and brainstormed a way to rig the grill with the fryer.
