The city of Siena, a place in Tuscany, Italy, was a peaceful region. Until the Black Death approached in 1346. The Black Death was one of the most horrific, widespread, diseases that is known to mankind. The repercussions were grave. The deaths that were caused by the Black Death, ranged from 75 to 200 million people. Siena was one of the many cities to be burdened, with this dreadful disease. In Siena, due to the Black Death, 80,000 people died. The Black Death lasted from 1346-1353. All of Siena was mourning during this difficult time, although, on March 25, 1347, on Annunciation Day, which was Palm Sunday during that year, light was shed on Siena. Since Catherine’s mother had numerous of children to take care of, no one had much time to play with Catherine, so often Catherine played by herself. One of her most favorite places to play was the stairs. Catherine would run up and down the stairs to the shop, to the window, to the kitchen, and to her bedroom. Catherine would do everything on the stairs, she would play with her dolls, she would draw, she would read, hop up them, jump down them, and even eat on the stairs. She would go on long walks to pray to God, Catherine considered God to be her friend, that’s why she would go on those long walks, sometimes just to talk to him. Although after a period of time, this action was becoming problematic. Catherine’s mother, Lapa, feared something would happen to little Catherine, because Catherine would go by herself, and she was so young, so she prevented Catherine from going on those long walks. Yet Catherine wouldn’t let that stop her from talking and praying to God. Catherine then decided to walk around her backyard praying and talking to God. She started to do this so much that the other children started not to play with her anymore, because they thought it was strange that she would rather be with God then them. Though Catherine didn’t mind, that meant that she could spend time with God
