Black Lives Matter is a social movement that was founded mid-2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. The movement originated in the African American community but is now international. Its goal is to campaign against violence and systemic racism toward people of color. Protests are held to bring awareness to police killings, racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequalities that plague our judicial system. What started out as a hashtag (#BLM, #BlackLivesMatter) is now a nationally recognized movement that has grasped the attention of many well-known activist and celebrities. They’ve used their platforms to help push the campaign's agenda.
