For my novel study, I chose The Book of Negroes, by Lawrence Hill. Set in the 1700’s in a variety of locations from Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, and parts of North America. The main character, Aminata Diallo, later called Meena by everyone who couldn’t pronounce her name, was stolen from her home-land in Africa at only 11 years old. She was taken on a long journey through Africa to the coast, across the Atlantic Ocean on a ship and sold as a slave in North America.
Aminata uses knowledge in hopes of gaining freedom. She was learning her prayers in Arabic, and learning how to write the letters in the sand while in her village in Africa as a young girl. She also knew two languages, while most in her village only knew one. Her mother was a
