The Chumash were the first people along the California coastline living in the Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. They are believed to have lived here for thousands of years, and archeologists have discovered sites in the past decades that date to 15,000 years. The diet of the Chumash people was composed of available natural sources, such as fish, abalone, and most importantly acorn gathered from the live oak trees. They hunted various animals on both sea and land, and also gathered plant food such as pine nuts, wild cherries, berries, mushrooms, and many types of seeds. The amole, or soap plant, was their favorite, and they ate the bulbs of it after roasting them. The Chumash made eating utensils such as plates and bowls from wood. Pieces
