The Civil War: Slavery In The Northern States

The civil war, to many people, was the war on slavery. Although there were many other reasons why the civil war happened and one of the main reasons it occurred was because there was an unfair voice in the government among the states. There was more representation for the Northern States than the Southern states. The Southern states were mostly made up of slaves compared to the population of the Northern states. Now the population that counted towards the amount of representation in Congress was the white population. The South was an agricultural part of the states whereas the North was strictly the industrial center. Therefore the amount of slavery in the Northern states was still around during the mid- 1800’s but it was not the main work force in the Northern States (Civil War Trust). The amount of slaves in the South was two-thirds the amount of white people in the South meaning the representation in the Congress was based on the dismal white population that resided in the South. What does that mean for the elections? Well the elections like every compromise on the issue of slavery was a balancing act of the candidate who was running for office. It was the best of both worlds in a sense until and act came along called the Kansas- Nebraska Act was passed on 1854 which would allow Nebraska and Kansas to decide whether or not the state was to be a free state or a slave state (Ourdocuments.gov). It was meant to allow the states to make a choice which was a positive notion but there was a huge problem that came out from the Act and that was the problem of people rushing to those states to make the decision.
