States rights are defined as “The rights and powers held by individual US states rather than by the federal government.” This definition is important because it was one of the critical reasons why the civil war was not avoidable. However, there were also many other reasons why the Civil War was important to our government. Some of these reasons include slavery and states’ vs. federal rights.

A critical part of the civil war was slavery. Southerners were in slavery and fought to keep their way of life. Southerners depended on slaves for economic value to grow crops for them.
