The Battle of Chickamauga was fought on September 18th through 20th in 1863. Braxton Bragg’s Army in Tennessee defeated a Union force instructed by General William Rosecrans. After Rosecrans’ troops pushed the Confederates out of Chattanooga earlier that month, Bragg called for additions to his troops and launched a counterattack on the banks of nearby Chickamauga Creek. Over two days of battle, the rebels forced Rosecrans to give way, with heavy losses on both occasions. .
