Imagine someone has spent their life trying to become a good person and make better decisions each day, only for something terrible to occur and hurt them in several ways. While this may seem like an extreme situation, this is exactly what happens to several characters in The Crucible, as well as several historical figures. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a tragedy play based on the Salem Witch trials set in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The play is a direct allegory for the 1950 McCarthy hearings, which Miller directly parallels with his characters and genre of play. Throughout history, many inspirational and good intentioned people had terrible things happen to them. Martin Luther King, Jr., was an inspirational figure who was a civil rights activist who believed in nonviolent protest. In an article from History.com it teaches, “King had also become a target for white supremacists, who firebombed his family home that January.” This was just one example of many times that MLKs life and the lives of his wife, Corretta Scott King, and daughter, Yolanda, were in harm's way. Even though MLK was an inspirational figure, who also was a pastor, and aimed to end social injustice peacefully, he still had many terrible things happen to him, with the final one being his assassination. Another example of an inspirational, good-hearted person in history, who can easily disprove John’s statement in The Crucible, is Malala. Malala is a women’s education rights activist, who is relevant to our time, and fights against Taliban restrictions.
