The Crusades
The crusades were Holy Wars in which the people who were considered “rivals” of Christianity, were fought. In order for it to be an official crusade, it had to be blessed by the Pope. The Muslims had taken over most of Palestine, Syria, Africa, Egypt, and Spain, which were originally Christian dominated. The goal behind the eight official crusades and the one unofficial crusade were for the Christians to get back their Holy Land, and the Muslim conquered city of Jerusalem. There were around a million deaths, and only the first crusade was actually successful in taking back Jerusalem. There were many aspects to the crusades that caused them to be important, and many long lasting ramifications that are relevant even today.
