Introduction Paragraph: Social Media: Draft Selena Gomez, a film actor, singer and model, once said, “I would deactivate every single comment on any social media. You should be able to post what you want, say what you want, be what you want without anybody judging you”. Social media is a place where people post about their lives and talk to people across the world. The most popular social media apps are WhatsApp, Messenger, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. People use those apps to communicate with other people and post about their life or what they want to share. The average time teens spend using social media is about 4.8 hours a day. People are concerned about social media because the more time teens spend on it, the more it can lead to depression, cyberbullying, or even social anxiety. The first reason why social media is detrimental to the world is that it affects people's mental health. In the documentary called The Social Dilemma it stated that the suicide rates for girls ages 10-14 have increased 89% and for the ages 15-19 the percent has increased 62% since 2009.This shows that social media is making the gen-z generation more vulnerable and to causing harm to themselves. Social media can also lead to cyberbullying, which appears to increase suicide attempts, which is a risk factor for complete suicide. The second piece of evidence is from the University of Utah. Heath said “That young adults who use social media are three times as likely to suffer from depression, putting a large portion of the population at risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.”This proves that social media exposes people to things they shouldn’t see or hear which leads to anxiety, self-harm, suicide and even
