My name is Sophia Issayas, I am an 11th grader currently attending Hamilton High School. This past week I have been assigned to choose a local issue and address it to an elected official. Initially when I was tasked with this project, homelessness in Los Angeles came to mind. Me and many others have been impacted by this problem, from harassment to not even being able to walk on the sidewalks near our homes. Homelessness in Los Angeles is a persistent and growing issue. As of 2018, there has been a 12% increase in homelessness. This surge has a big impact on city residents. 75% of unhoused people lack permanent shelter, forcing them to make due with what they can like, using tents and sleeping bags, hiding under awnings during rough weather.
