The executive branch carries out and enforces laws. The President of the United States is the head of the executive branch and gets help from the Vice President, cabinet members, and heads of independent agencies. The President leads the country, leader of the federal government, and Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces. The Vice President supports the President. If the President is unable to serve, the Vice President takes his place. Cabinet members serve as advisors to the President. They include the Vice President and the heads of executive departments.

The heads of the federal executive departments are known as secretaries of their respective department. They form the traditional Cabinet of the United States. The Department of Health and Human Services ensures the safety of the nation's food supply and tests and approves all drugs.
The Department of Education was made in 1979. It is the smallest Cabinet level department.
