Their relationship went from this resilient bond during her childhood to losing all respect towards her father during her teenage years. Jeannette’s adulthood had many eye opening events that made her see the good side of things. The man who had stolen and refused to provide much help to the family was now assisting Jeannette as shown “Hundreds of dollar bills-ones, fives, tens, twenties, all wrinkled and worn-spilled into my lap” (Walls 264). He came in handy when Jeannette was struggling to pay for her final year tuition at Barnard. This just goes to show how one may have bad habits but the intentions are still good. Rex Walls had a drinking problem all throughout his life which caused Jeannette and her family to experience numerous hardships but in the end he would always be there to help.
