The playwright, Tennessee Williams, scripted The Glass Menagerie in 1945 and it follows the story of a young man named Tom Wingfield who reminisces on his life through memories. In Scene One and Two, the Wingfield family reveals their troubling lifestyle. Amanda, Tom’s mother, and Laura, Tom’s sister, struggle to accept that each person has their own issues. Families crave a picture perfect life for each of the members, which prompts those who cannot fit the mold to rebel privately and for some to merely ignore evident troubles of others. For example, Amanda is lost and stuck in her early life as a Southern belle, and she constantly brags, “your mother received -- seventeen -- gentlemen callers” (Williams 11-12).
