Honest or Dishonest?
A person might quickly tell the truth from a lie by observing someone’s body language. In this case it could be harder for a reader to criticize the honesty of a character from the book. An honest narrator, he or she, are the big crucial key to satisfy the process of understanding the characters in the book better. In the book The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway the narrator is presented as an honest and dependable generally because he presents original plots or conversations and leaves to the readers to summarize, he reserves all judgements from characters in general, and these aspects of him can be determined by contrasting others deceit in the book.

In fact, he has high integrity and dignity while other characters do not. For instance, “- I was one of few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited-they went there” (Fitzgerald 41), most of the people went there without an invitation. This shows that these people have low morals and are deceptive. Nick says “I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” (Fitzgerald 59). This is very true, first of all because Nick doesn’t know many people because he is new to West Egg. This narrows it down to the number of people which makes it easier for the reader to make the comparison of honesty between the narrator and others characters more clearly. This fact can also provide more direct information to readers which can help examine Nick statement about himself. Throughout the book there are several big liars, for example, Nick’s friend Tom, has an affair with Mr.Wilson’s wife- Myrtle. Mr.Gatsby also gets his money from illegal business which he lies about. None of these characters are reliable which make Mr. Carraway an honest
