IOP Essay The actions and behaviors of people are a mirroring image of what society expects from them. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald gives his audience the opportunity to visualize life during the 1920’s. He suggests that the 1920’s were a time where people of society were no longer human, they were hollow. Today in literature, messages are often miss-interpreted and distorted. In other words, the original message that the author had intended to get across becomes lost in the “valley of ashes” there is today. One of the ways that this occurs is film-making.
