The Hippocratic Oath is a promise that doctors make to protect and help others who are sick or in need. Parts of this oath are expressed in the story, such as, "I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow... I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug... I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm...," just to name a couple (Lasagna). Knowing of this oath, it's very clear to see that Prof. Nemur and Dr. Strauss were using it as a guideline that allowed them to act ethically throughout Charlie's …show more content…
They went through all that was necessary, knew every step, and how to cope with the situation emotionally. According to the "Five Steps of Ethical Thinking" by Andrew Dobrin, they showed that they knew how to think before they acted, which is a very good skill. By making sure it was safe on an animal whose cell structure was close to a human's, they showed that they used the Hippocratic Oath to make sure the human test subject was safe from any harm. Finally, even though they didn’t cover every little part of the ethical questions asked towards themselves and the patient, they covered everything that needed to be considered. Therefore, in conclusion, Professor Nemur and Doctor Strauss did act ethically while performing the operation on Charlie
