Holocaust Was the death of six million Jews during World War II a mere coincidence? No, it is not a coincidence because the death of six million Jews was a mass murder or also known as genocide. The culprit of the genocide was the Nazi regime, whose leader Adolf Hitler was obsessed with a superior and perfect race. The Holocaust started as discrimination, and then in 1939 the Nazis began to isolate Jews into ghettos. The mass killings of Jews began in 1941, the Nazis used hard labor, gas chambers, and mass shooting to eliminate as much of the Jewish population as possible. There are many individuals that deny that the Holocaust happened. They do not deny that members of the Jewish population had been killed, but they claim six million is an exaggeration. There are many countries in Europe that have banned any form of Holocaust denial. “The European Union approved legislation that would make the denial of the Holocaust punishable by jail sentence…legislation calls for jail terms of as much as three years” (Bilefsky). “All EU member states are under the legal obligation to criminalize genocide denial” (Pech). The strict punishments in the EU penalize anyone who attempts to deny the Holocaust. Germany passed laws to criminalize anyone who denied the “extermination of the Jews” (Dahmann). Holocaust denial is very dangerous. It suggests looking beyond the evil of genocide and forgetting it ever happened. The consequence of denying the Holocaust could possibly mean history repeating itself. The punishment of denial should be enforced by many to protect society from enduring the harsh reality the Nazis created. If countries recognize the Holocaust denial with a jail sentence; then there has to be enough evidence to back up the claim that the Holocaust was a real event in
