The Hunting Grounds is a documentary that highlights the growing problem of rape on college campuses. This film shares anecdotes of survivors of sexual assault and the startling statistics about rape. Throughout this film we see how rape has effected the lives of these victims and their families. We are introduced to many survivors but the central focus is on Andrea Pino and Annie Clark. As the movie progress, we witness these two-remarkable woman and other countless individuals fight to change campus policies regarding the reporting of sexual assault.
This documentary is controversial because it makes the claims that universities take the sides of the assailants and in almost all the testimonies shared, they unanimously end with the universities placing the blame on the victim. Asking victims questions in a manner insinuating that they welcomed the attacks because of the type of clothing they were wearing or even that the incidence occurred because of how much alcohol they consumed. Kamilah Willingham, was a third-year Harvard Law student who reported that she as well as her friend were sexually assaulted by another student to the Harvard Office of Sexual Assault and Responses. This fact is horrifying because it highlights a huge problem on college campuses and it is scary to think that a fellow classmate, friend, or loved one may have been a victim of assault. This documentary also taught me that rape is not exclusive to just women, men can also be victims of this heinous act. One thing, that I do wish this documentary did was give the viewers information on how we can become involved and what steps can we take to help make a change.
