The Importance Of Faith In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

In the story, Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the man, “young” and innocent, has to say goodbye to his wife, Faith. Faith wants him to stay with her but she tells her that he won’t be gone for a long time. He then wanders to the forest of Salem and is approached by an old man about 50 years of age. They looked very similar, yet his companion had simple clothes on but carried a staff that looked like a black serpent. Goodman Brown thought that he had taken the wrong turn so he wanted to turn back, however, the companion told him that his father and grandfather and other townspeople people like the governor took the same path road. As he’s sitting, Goodman hears someone talking about what they are going to do about the communion. Turns out it was the minister and Deacon Gookin on horseback because they were gonna take a young woman in. Goodman begins to listen more and as he is doing this, he hears the voice of Faith. He shouts her name out yet the only thing he hears is the echo and silence that came after. A pink ribbon then falls from the sky (Faith’s ribbon) and Goodman starts rushing to the gathering. Once he reaches where he needed to go, he is met with an altar with four burning trees. Many of the townspeople were there already including criminals. Goodman is led to the altar along with a clocked female figure. A dark figure then comes and points to the crowd behind them. This was the group Goodman grew up with. They are saying that this group is full of sinners and the woman in the cloak is revealed. Turns out it was Faith and Goodman couldn’t believe it.
