It has been over 153 years since the Dakota uprising in 1862. The Indian Wars lasted twenty-five years and was a disastrous time for the history of Dakota, all Native peoples and the territory of Minnesota. The impact of the war, the causes and its aftermath has had a profound impact on the shaping of Minnesota as a State, as well as the United States as a Nation. Native Nations have always be stereotyped as a savage people. They were considered incapable of being on the same level intellectually and virtue as the Europeans who conquered them. The United States government and its military forces outlawed Native ceremonies, rites and practices and it was not until 1978 that Natives were given full freedom to practice their traditional religions.xx
