Hans Hubermann and Rudy’s father, Alex Steiner have gone off to war. Liesel and Rudy steal cookies and a plate as well as the book The Last Human Stranger from the Mayor’s house. While there Liesel runs into Ilsa Hermann and they have a talk. Michael Holtzapfel, Frau Holtzapfel’s son, comes back from war with and injured hand and news of his brother Robert’s death. Hans switches seats with a Reinhold Zucker who dies soon after, as the left front tire blows out and the car wrecks, Hans feels like it is his fault even though Zucker made him switch seats. Hans broke his leg in the wreck and is on his way back to Himmel street and Liesel. Rudy is angry at all the wealthy Nazis(Adolf Hitler) for making their fathers go to war, so he decides he’s going to go steal from a wealthy Nazi in town and packs a toolbox, but he backs out at the last second and he leaves his soiled socks as a gift to them. …show more content…
They find a crashed plane and a barely breathing pilot, Rudy gives the pilot the teddy bear from his toolbox and right before the pilot dies he says thank you in english. Hans comes home and soon after Michael Holtzapfel commits suicide. There is another parade of Jews and Liesel sees Max in the crowd. Liesel goes to him and they reunite, but a German soldier notices her and forces her out of the crowd of marchers. Liesel's tries again, this time coming from the back and she tells Max he’s a word shaker too. A soldier catches them again and this time whips Max and Liesel. After that Liesel confesses to Rudy that the Hubermanns hid a Jew in their basement. Liesel goes to the Mayor’s wife’s library again and destroys a book because words are useless. She writes a letter apologizing and Ilsa shows up at the house on Himmel street and gives her a book and Liesel writes The Book Thief.
