In the book The Medicine Bag by Virginia Driving Hawk starts off with Joe Iron Shell traveling a long distance to give one to his grandchild Martin. During the book you can how both Martin and his grandfather struggle with the medicine bag, and their opposite lifestyles. When reading the book you will be able to see how Joe Iron Shell was a persistent, passionate, and a kind-hearted man to his family and others.
