When Rainsford had to swim at the beginning of the story, he was prepared to swim more. It was easier for him to swim again. ¨Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then leapt far out into the sea¨. Rainsford knew that swimming was the only way he could survive and he knew he would live because he had to swim before that. Zaroff didn´t expect Rainsford to swim but Rainsford was used to the water. ¨´Rainsford!´ screamed the general. ´How in God's name did you get here?´ ´śwam´, said Rainsford. ´I found it quicker than walking through the jungle´¨ (34). Rainsford knew that he would have less problems if he just swam. Him being on the island got him prepared for what he had to deal with.
The setting made it possible for Rainsford to kill Zaroff and for Zaroff to hunt Rainsford. Zaroff had a new animal to hunt and he could only hunt it because he was on that island. When Rainsford was being hunted, he hid from Zaroff and the jungle made it easier for him. And from what Rainsford had to go at the beginning of the story, it made things easier for him to stay alive because he was used to it.The island made is easier for the story to happen just like classrooms make it easier for students to learn. If things happened in another place, learning or hunting wouldn't work so
