The Olmec were the first Native Americans to have a civilization in Mexico. Their civilization lasted through 400-800 BC. The Mayas had their civilization in Mexico 300 BC to 900 BC. The Toltec civilization ruled 900-1200. The Aztec however were the civilization who made the central plateau from their capital in Tenochtitlan, which later became Mexico City. There are many amazing pyramids and temples to prove that these civilizations occurred. In 1517 Fernandez de Cordoba was the first European to explore Mexico. Heman Cortes along with others captured the capital and the emperor of the Aztec in 1519. Christianity came to Mexico when the territory of Mexico became the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Mexico gained independence, in 1821, from Spain.
