In the story The Pigman, by Paul Zindel, two sophomore kids, Lorraine Jensen, and John Conlan, get involved with an older man named Mr. Pignati. The story alternates every chapter from John’s to Lorraine’s point of view. John, Lorraine, and a couple of their friends have a prank-call game as one of their avocations, and they prank call a man named Mr. Pignati. John and Lorraine convince him to donate money to a made up fund by telling a prevarication, and go to his house to collect the money. Afterward, Lorraine feels mortified, so John uses the money for himself. Mr. Pignati introduces to them a room with a ton of ceramic pigs in it, which is where he gets his nickname, “The Pigman.” Mr. Pignati invites them to go to the zoo and shows them a baboon named Bobo, who he claims is his best friend. As they grow a stronger relationship with Mr. Pignati, John and Lorraine find out his wife is dead, and he’s very lonely. The three of them go to the zoo more, and hang out outside of his house together. At the department store, Mr. Pignati is very generous and buys them roller skates, which turns out to not be a great idea. They come back to his house, and John and Lorraine find themselves in a predicament. After Mr. Pignati tells them about his wife, they feel like a couple of ingrates for not telling him the truth about themselves, so they mention that they’re just sophomores in high school, and not charity workers. The Pigman takes it really well. Then, they go around his house on their roller skates, and Mr. Pignati gets a heart attack chasing them. Mr. Pignati immediately gets taken to the hospital. John and Lorraine convince the doctors and say they’re his children just visiting him. Mr. Pignati hands them his keys and tells them they can go to his house at any
