Racism and race should most definitely be discussed in American public high schools as part of the curriculum. In the U.S. racism can be hard to talk about for many reasons, either people do not want to believe it still exists in today's society, people do not want to admit they themselves have racist and biased opinions, or people can be to nervous and do not want to offend anyone or make anyone mad. Having a specific class, or just a unit in an english or history class, designated to talking about race can make people more comfortable talking about it, and expose those who may not understand completely how serious and big race issues can be for others. In the curriculum we could go over the history of racism, where and how it still is a prominent issue today, student’s opinions, and possible solutions in the government or just life. It is hard to comprehend racism and why it is so ingrained in our society today without understanding this history behind it. In class we do learn about slaves, the slave trade, and everything the slave system did for our economy 200 years ago. Along with that we should learn about what slavery was like all around the world in different locations and how slavery began in each place. America’s economy and average lifestyle was dependent on slave labor. Sure the laws protecting enslavement have been demolished, and black people have recieved the basic human rights they deserve but it takes much longer to change a whole nation’s views and opinions than it does to change legislation.
