Similarly, Laertes was protective over Ophelia. However, his love was more like a brotherly love trying to protect his younger sister. When they’re first introduced in the play the two siblings are shown to have a loving and respectful bond, and that goes on throughout the play. In the first scene they’re shown together Laertes is giving advice to Ophelia, by telling her to stay away from Hamlet as he might have bad desires and is much older than her. While he’s talking to Ophelia he says,
“Fear it, Ophelia. Fear it, my dear sister, /And keep you in the rear of your affection, /Out of the shot and danger of desire.” (1.3.33-35) telling her to keep her love in control and not to let Hamlet take advantage of her. This shows that he loves and cares for her wellbeing. Although Hamlet and Laertes have different ways of protecting her, they both love her. In conclusion, Hamlet and Laertes have many similarities, but there is always a few differences such as, both their father’s died, but their relationship with their father’s different, they both wanted revenge on their father’s killer, but had different approaches of doing so, and both loved and wanted to protect Ophelia, but had different ways of showing it.
