O'Flaherty uses personification to emphasise the noise of war which shows us that war is not quiet and peaceful. He begins by sayjng "The heavy guns roared". This example of onomatopeia halps the reader understand how dangerous war can be if you are out and about in the streets of Dublin at the time of the war. This also tells us that the safest place during the Irish civil war is to stay indoors where it is much safer.
