Ms. Fadiman opens the book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down with the her introduction to the Lee family, a Hmong family that immigrated to America from Lao in the 1980's. The “collisions” between the Hmong communities and the American doctors had brought her to California in 1988, which she hoped to intercede to prevent further damage upon either party. Fadiman takes the position that from watching from the sidelines gives you a better vantage on the situation, although it doesn't seem to be how she initially positioned herself during the Hmong v. Western medicine conflict, therefore she was hoping not to get caught in the crossfire of the two groups.
Fadiman came to a point where she wondered two things
1) What makes a good doctor?
And 2) What make a good parent.

During the pregnancy there are ways t ensure a smooth birth by keeping track of the woman's cravings. When Foua Yang gave birth to her thirteenth child in an American hospital the main birth practices were unable to be observed because her daughter's placenta had been incinerated. The disconnect between the two societies allowed this to happen because, the American common practice is to discard the placenta, and a Hmong among westerners would not know to ask to have it preserved.
