“If we let Korea down,”President Harry Truman said, “the Soviets will keep right on going and swallow up one place after another.” The conflict takes place on the peninsula of Korea which is located on China’s northeastern border and just North of Japan. The Korean War was the first major battle of the cold war in between communism and capitalism. The Korean War took place from 1950 to 1953 until a armistice was signed by the Chinese, North Koreans, and Americans, but the South Korean government never agreed to the armistice which means that the war still happening to this day. They gained the trust of China by helping them in their revolutionary war and helping a socialist leader gain control of China. South Korea, North Korea, The Soviet Union, China, United States, United Nations, Turkey, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Iran, Australia, Philippines, India, Greece, Italy, Thailand, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Luxembourg, Ethiopian Empire, and the Union of South Africa were the countries involved in the Korean War. Not all of these countries fought in the war some supplied weapons and ammunition while others donated medical supplies. Out of the 23 allies the Americans contributed the most on the battlefield. The Americans were the first to send soldiers to Korea. The first soldiers were a small force called Task Force Smith which was a small group of 400 or so men that came from Japan. Douglas Macarthur was a five star general from World War 1 and World War 2 that was the commander of United Nation troops in Korea before he was fired by President Harry Truman when Macarthur wanted to bring the war into China. Douglas was fired on April 11, 1951 for insubordination by wanting to invade China and run communism out of China. Macarthur also defied Truman’s orders of not getting close to the Yalu River and provoking the Chinese. Macarthur did the opposite and caused the Chinese to join the war. Not all of South Korea’s allies sent soldiers to fight. Some countries sent guns, ammunition, and also medical supplies. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the United Nations force, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. The South Koreans had many allies that helped them in a number of different ways to stop the North Koreans. With the contributions of 23 other countries the South was able to push the North Koreans back to the 38th parallel which is still their current
