In The Good Earth, O-lan is a very strong lady who works hard to provide for her family. While O-lan is pregnant she was in the fields working right to the time she had her baby. Another reason why O-lan is brave and a strong lady is because she keeps to herself by staying in the background but she also continues to work hard sometimes harder than the men. O-lan is a very quiet woman but when she does talk she tells of what happened to her in the big house hoping they believe her and allow her protect her children. For the beauty of the land, O-lan and the ”Virtuous Woman’s” husband will see them as laborers to keep their land producing rich beauty. Wang Lung does not even really love her, he loves the hard work she provides. O-lan would never talk except when she stated what she knew and went through. Wang Lung thought about putting his daughter up for sale to the big house and she refused. O-lan refused to sale her daughter because she knew the pain and suffering that would go along with being sold into a form of slavery. There was a time Wang Lung wanted to sale the land but O-lan refused to allow him to do so for they will not be able to provide for themselves. The land is what they have lived for and worked. If they were to sale everything, they have worked for or their daughter they would not have what they have accomplished now. The “Virtuous Woman” earns everything she owns from working for it. While working in the field, she plants a vineyard to grow food for her family. The “Virtuous Woman” makes her clothes from purple silk and O-lan makes all of their clothes out of what looks like old rags not being used to make sure her children will not go without clothes. The “Virtuous Woman” grows her vineyard to ensure her family has food but O-lan works all through her pregnancy on the land.
