Robert seemed to be a likeable guy and seemed to have friends in and out of the war, he had family back at home and its certain he missed them. Robert not only had to deal with the loss of his sister or the separation from his life back home but he also had to deal with the death of his friend Devlin being shot and killed for trying to help him let horses out. Robert was horrified by the loss of his friend and he did something he thought would make it right and that was to shoot the fellow commanding officer who shot Devlin. Robert was also frightened to find out that his good friend Taffler had lost both of his arms in a battle. It's not certain to say but there's a very good chance the horrors of war were starting to set in for Robert, he was missing his family, the death of his friends and just the survival instinct needed to survive must have been crippling. It's easy to assume that Robert never would have made it as far as he did without him being able to bring out that inner emotional courage and deal with the separation from his family and friends as good as he did.
