Witch Child The year is 1659, a time period of fear and lies. In “Witch Child”, the main character named Mary Newbury, who lived in a small cottage with her grandma. This was a year of desperation for her. While she watched her beloved grandma was hanged as a witch in a public place. She was filled was fear. Soon those relentless crowd turned upon Mary. Luckily, Mary met a mysterious person who offered her a way out of this dangerous cottage – a safe passage to America. She knew that she must run away from this dirty place where killed her grandma. I am curious about what Celia Rees wanted to tell readers. She just wanted to tell us the history of witch or wanted to tell us about some other serious things during the 17th century. Initially, in 1659, the most famous event was the witch hunting. This was the easiest way for people to kill all the witches during the 17th century. In this novel, Mary experienced the witch hunting in both her “hometown” – the small cottage and the village in America. In the cottage, her beloved grandma was hanged as a witch and was killed by people. Those who treated Mary as “Devil Child”, and tormented Mary as not a human. Then Mary was offered a safe passage to America by a mysterious person. Although she could keep away from this dangerous cottage, no matter where she went, she still was the witch. All the things she could do was only to hide her witch background to everyone she met in America. The author, Celia Rees, wanted to express the level of disparity of the witches in the 17th century. Furthermore, the author wanted readers know more background about the witch hunting and let readers know how hopeless the witch life was. Witch hunting means “a searching out for persecution of persons accused of witchcraft.” (“Witch”). For common people, they might think that witch hunting was a normal event; however, it did not mean the same for those witches. This kind of action might hurt witches a lot. In the novel, Mary Newbury described the witch hunting by the form of diary. In her diary, readers could know about the witch hunting in an easy way. At the beginning of the novel, it described how rude those people, who lived in the small cottage, treated Mary and her grandma. During about half of the novel, Mary was enjoying her life because she stayed with her friends and she escaped from her “hometown”.
