Loisel was very materialistic which caused her problems. Being materialistic is when you want a certain thing because it is fancy or everybody else has that item. Mme. Loisel tells her husband “it is embarrassing not to have a jewel or a gem-nothing to wear on my dress” (75). It is important not to be materialistic so you can appreciate what you have instead of wanted something better than what you have. Mme. Loisel has so much pride in what others think that it cause problems for her. Having pride means you care about what others think about you. Mme. Loisel cares a lot about what others think about her. She does not want people to think that she is poor. She wanted all the attention to be on her during the affair. “Mme. Loisel was a sensation. She was the prettiest one there, fashionable, gracious, smiling, and wild with joy” (76). It is important to have pride in yourself but having too much pride can be harmful not everybody is going to like you. Being selfish, materialistic, and being full of pride cause Mme. Loisels downfall. Through the story Mme. Loisel wanted to have a beautiful dress and jewel for the affair. She borrowed a diamond necklace from Mme. Forstier and lost it. She has been working for 10 years trying to pay off the debt she went into buying the necklace. Later on she found out she replaced a fake diamond necklace with a real diamond necklace.
