Good Morning/Afternoon Mr Kulesza, Casablanca is a movie about Rick Blaine who owns his own nightclub in Casablanca in which he discovers his old love Ilsa is in his town with her husband Victor Laszlo. Laszlo is a framed rebel and has the Germans on his tail, Ilsa is aware that Rick can help both her and Laszlo get out of the country.
During the 1 hour and 42 minutes of this extraordinary movie there are many themes that Michael Curtiz uses to show the interactions between characters and these include Love and Hate. These two themes are mostly shown between Ilsa and Rick since they were lovers in the past in Paris but then Ilsa found out Laszlo was in fact still alive.

In scene 1 Rick sees Ilsa again after he overhears Sam playing ‘As Time Goes By’ and at the point Rick sees Ilsa for the first time since she abandoned him in Paris. In scene 2 which is the flashback scene the song is played again at ricks request, rick slips into a flashback of the time he spent with Ilsa in Paris and when he fell in love with her. The way ‘As Time Goes By’ is played in the scene shows that Paris was a happier time for him, and the audience can see this as a more cheerful version of the song is played and it focuses on the sweet writing of the strings and major cords and does not hint at any minor keys lie the original. The quote “Play it again Sam” is very famous as it was the song that was playing the last night that Rick and Ilsa saw each other. Rick had already ordered Sam never to play that song again, but when Ilsa goes into Ricks Café she asks Sam to play it. This is an example of how Rick has allowed his happy memories of Paris to be tainted by Ilsa abandoning him in Paris, and that her re-appearing forced him to face the nature of his
