Taking the Individual Counseling Theories course exposed me to over a dozen approaches to counseling that should be considered as an aspiring professional school counselor. The brief introductions to each theory has allowed me opportunity to take the time to explore and examine the counseling techniques and theoretical approaches that best fit my “personal values and convictions about human beings and life in general” (Watts, 1993, p. 103). The process has been enlightening and has set a path for further exploration into the theories that would work well for students in the school counseling setting. In Counseling in Schools, Vaida, Kallay, & Opre (2008) provided great insight into the use of REBT in a high school setting. Their research study tested the effectiveness of REBT with students through a Rational Emotive Behavior Education (REBE) program with high school students, a successfully “achieved significant changes in the belief systems, emotions, and behaviors, by using REBE intervention” (Vaida, et. al., 2008, p. 57). As far as an journal article related to SFBT, I came across an article entitled Integrating Play Therapy Techniques Into Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (Nims, 2007). In this article, Nims provides the framework for integrating play therapy into SFBT for effective treatment with children (Nims, 2007). One of the first books I plan to purchase is A Guide to Rational Living, written by the father of SFBT, Albert Ellis, along with author Robert Harper. This book is supposed to help individuals to feel more confident and deal with life’s issue more with more effectiveness (Ellis & Harper, 1975). Secondly, I hope to order a book that I have heard is great resource for REBT therapist working with students and adults alike. The book, The REBT Super-Activity Guide (Garcy, 2009) is a resource packed with 52 weeks of activities to use in therapy sessions, as well as take home task assignments. I believe this resource would serve me well as a new counselor, and even leave room for me to grow in creating my own
