Part 1

Scenario: Ruben wants to determine if listening to different types of music will have an effect on a person’s pulse. His hypothesis states that if a person listens to rap music, their pulse will increase more than if they listen to other types of music. Ruben takes each participant’s pulse before, during, and after listening to 30 minutes of music. He has his mother listen to rock music, his sister listen to classical music, and his friend listen to rap music. From the data collected, he determined that rap music raises a person’s pulse the most.

1. Identify the independent and dependent variables in Ruben’s hypothesis.
Independent Variable: The amount of time each person listens to the music (In this case is half an hour), and the type of music.
Dependent Variable: The pulse each person has.

2. Despite the results, this experiment is not able to support Ruben’s hypothesis. Suggest specific improvements that will make the experiment test the given hypothesis. Explain why these changes need improvements.

In my opinion, he should have had every person listen to the music in the same environment so that way other factors or causes wouldn’t have affected the experiment. Also, music affects people differently, so he should have had evey person listen to each type of music. Moreover, he should have tried the experiment several times. In order to get accurate results.

Part Two:
*Scenario and Purpose: Adriana watches her grandfather bake bread. She asks her grandfather what makes the bread rise. He explains that yeast releases a gas as it feeds on sugar. Then, Adriana wonders if the amount of sugar used in the loaf will affect the size of the bread loaf?
*Research: Adriana starts researching the areas of baking and fermentation and tries to come up with a way to test her question. She keeps all her information on her agenda.

*Hypothesis: If more sugar is added, then the bread will rise higher (TESTED HYPOTHESIS).
2nd Hypothesis: If you let the dough rise too long, it will start having a yeast or beer smell and will rise poorly in the oven.
*Experiment: Adriana tells her teacher about her experiment, and he helps her come up with a procedure and list of materials needed, and he explains her how to come up with a dependent, independent variables, and controlled variables. He also tells her she should use 25g, 50g, 100g, and 250 g of sugar in her experiment. Adriana’s teacher reminds her to keep all other factors the same so that any observed changes in the bread can be attributes to the variation in the amount of
