In the initial stage of counseling, a counselor needs to access the clients’ problem because there is no one size fit all approach to the therapeutic process (Whiston, 2017). When first meeting a client, there may be many issues that they are facing. An initial visit will not always determine the presenting problem, but it will lead you in the right direction. The initial visit is also the first step to building a report with the client. This is essential because gaining a client’s trust may impact the way that the client interacts with the counselor.

Jadine was born on September 9, 1994 and is 18 years old. Her chronological age is calculated to be 18 years old. My client was referred because she had a panic attack while in class that was severe, and it took her 30 minutes to catch her breathe. Jadine Sawyer initially was referred to counseling because of a recent panic attack that occurred while in her math class. She would like to figure out what to do once she graduates from high school. She is a single mother and will also have to figure out how to make time to relax. The goals for the overall evaluation process are to complete the initial assessment to determine her presenting issues, and to complete other appropriate assessment tool to determine career goals and college interest and to determine the severity of her anxiety.
