Caroline, wanted for her father to stop “teaching” her to read. Scout was distraught over the fact that Atticus could not read to her anymore. Whenever Scout asked her father about why Ms. Caroline would do such a thing, Atticus said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 33). Atticus is teaching Scout people generally have a reason for doing things. They don’t just say something just to do it. In this case, the teacher just wanted for the whole class to be at the same level learning. Scout also inquires others with contrasting views to better shape her perspective, so she can determine for herself what is right and wrong. For example, when Scout asks her father, Atticus, why he is representing Tom Robinson, a black man, he says, “‘if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.’” (Lee 86). Atticus is trying to convey that it is wrong to give unequal treatment to someone just
