Walter Cunningham has been invited to Scouts house for dinner but during the meal, Scout makes rude remarks about Watlers food habits and Calpurnia has to talk to her because of it. Calpurnia saying, “Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo‘ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Yo‘ folks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracin‘ ’em—if you can’t act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!”(25). Calpurnia has to tell Scout thats its rude to make negative remarks about Walters habits and that she needs to give respect when a guest enters their house. This shows that Scout is getting a lesson on what respect is so that she will learn to be more respectful among those around her and guests. Scout learning what respect is helps her be a more mature and civilized person because she will be polite and courteous to those around her and not defame them because they act differently then she does. Being able to be courteous towards someone and giving them proper treatment is a valuable lesson that Scout learns that helps her become a more civilized
