To Forget is to Kill. Did you know an estimated 1/3 of all Jews alive at the time were systematically killed during the Holocaust? The Holocaust wasn't the only genocide that was fought for to remember, it wasn't the only one that had the oppressor remembered, but the victims forgotten. Wiesel explains how important it was to learn the horrors of the Holocaust so genocides like it don't reoccur.

In Elie's speech, he shares how people need to remember the Holocaust for future generations to remember so it doesn't happen again, and for the justice of those who were impacted. Elie states “I have tried to keep the memory alive, I have tried to fight those who would forget.” (Wiesel 118) This quote explains how he would fight and do anything in his power to keep the Holocaust remembered, because he knows that victims such as him deserve justice and respect for the horrific acts committed against them, and how their names deserve to be known and heard.
