In the book How to Kill a Mockingbird, the theme is that characters and people are not always what we initially believe them to be. We get this with two characters in the book, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Tom Robinson is a black man accused of rape, and Boo Radley is a man that everyone is scared of. Both characters are misunderstood and not what we believe them to be. Tom Robinson is not what we initially believed him to be at the beginning of the story. When we first hear about Tom Robinson we hear that he beat and raped Mayella Ewells.
