MAYCOMB - The trial of Tom Robinson came to a close this summer after a guilty verdict was reached by the jury following a four hour deliberation. The trial was open to the public and not a seat in the courthouse went unclaimed, making the trial one of the most popular events of this year.
The prosecution was the first to bring up witnesses, which featured the controversial and emotional testimony of Mayella Ewell. Ewell recounted the events of the night of November 21st before cross examination. Atticus Finch, the attorney for the defence, painted a picture of her rough home life, poked several holes in her story, and finally proposed Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father, as her attacker.
